Egypt's brand new Muslim Brotherhood led government is holding four Americans, including Sam LaHood, son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, captive in Cairo. And America is weakly reduced to imploring Islamic radicals for their release!
America MUST return to the Reagan Doctrine of Peace Through Strength! President Ronald Reagan understood what Barack Obama NEVER will. The ruinous and shameful path of appeasement, vacillation and weakness abroad brings crisis, and even potential disaster– just what now confronts us in Egypt.
For all the Leftist cant about the glorious Arab spring one would think the Middle East has been renewed with fairy dust and unicorns. But the plain truth is that what is new in the Middle East is NOT improved – especially liberty, human rights and international norms of government. Strong man authoritarianism has made way to Islamist tyranny. Over the past year, while Obama happily played appeasement games and gave his blessing especially to the Egyptian and Libyan uprisings, country after Middle Eastern country has fallen under the control of radical Islamists eager to flex their muscles against a newly impotent Uncle Sam.
And to prove their point, the Egyptian "government" this week began detaining Americans – including the son U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
Sam LaHood works with the NGO ('nongovernmental organization') International Republican Institute. LaHood and three other Americans were detained by Egyptian authorities at the Cairo Airport this week as they attempted to board their plane home. In a move typically preliminary to arrest, the Egyptian government suddenly and ominously announced that these Americans, along with at least two other Westerners, will not be allowed to leave the country.
What is particularly galling is anyone with a shred of common sense should have seen this coming. IRI's Cairo based offices were raided by Egyptian authorities on December 29. Computers, files and cash were taken and the offices forced to close. Egyptian authorities went on to interrogate the IRI employees, but declined to detain the employees at that time. Our Great Leader President responded by phoning Egyptian Field Marshal Tantawi on January 20 and whining about international community organizing.
A summary of the January 20 call was released by the White House which stated, "The president reinforced the necessity of upholding universal principles and emphasized the important role that civil society, including nongovernmental organizations, have in a democratic society. He underscored that nongovernmental organizations should be able to operate freely."
Gee, civil society plays an important role in a democratic society, underscore, underscore – with a necessity of upholding universal principles thrown in. Yay NGOs!
Not surprisingly, the 'pretty please be nice to our NGOs, charities and the foreigners working in your country' lecture didn't work, as just five days later the Egyptians decided to seize our Americans.
One can only hope that this latest hostage crisis won't last as long as the 444 days of captivity suffered by the victims of our last appeasement President, Jimmy Carter.
When will the Left learn that appeasement brings only shame, death and destruction in its wake? Remember 'speak softly and carry a big stick'? America MUST rapidly reverse Obama's course of appeasement and restore – not gut – our military and material capability in the interests of liberty for all the world yearning to be free. How else will we stand ready to protect and defend Americans, and assist those who with America oppose tyranny, injustice and oppression?
The sinking sense that under Obama one is reliving the dreadful Carter years of compromise, incompetence, impotence and malaise seems inescapable these days. Under Jimmy Carter, like under Obama, appropriate responses were impossible to come by. America needlessly betrayed long-time ally the Shah of Iran, then fecklessly failed to aid the Iranian elements aspiring to secular democratic government. Carter did not respond to the systematic slaughter of pro-democratic Iranians by Ayatollah Khomeini during the 1979 Revolution, just as Obama did not respond to the bloody suppression of democracy-seeking Iranians by the Islamist Republic following the June 2009 election frauds.
Carter's devastating lack of foreign policy leadership resulted in increasingly lawless Middle Eastern regimes that, upon sensing weakness, increased bold attacks on democratic and American interests. It was not until Ronald Reagan took office, stood tall and refused to be cowed by Islamic bullies, that the Middle East began to stabilize against aggression launched by dictators intent upon Pan- Arabism, nationalism, and even restoration of the caliphate and world domination. Reagan understood all too well what Carter, and now Obama and his administration do not. Appeasement does not work. Silence and/or sycophantic niceties only lead to more beatings. When a bully raises his fists, one must look the bully in the eye, say NO MORE and be prepared to back those words with swift and sure action as necessary. Only then will one emerge victorious over the violence of tyrants.
Four Americans were recently executed by Somali pirates in open international waters, a "tragedy" which Obama deplored. Four American airmen were recently gunned down at the Frankfurt airport, two fatally, by a Kosovan-German Muslim, an "outrage" which Obama also deplored.
Obama's empty words and flaccid non-response to Islam is dangerous, and reflects the deep menace posed to our national security and world peace by the person who presently sits in the Oval Office. Obama seems not to have grasped, or does not care, that tut-tuttery by the "international community" to an insane and violent tyrant like Qaddafi, pursuing murderous policies of political slaughter and mass martyrdom, means nothing to the butcher wielding power and will not quell the carnage. Nor does it get the U.S. and Obama a leadership hall pass for inaction. It just telegraphs Obama's deep willingness to appease evil, and thus our strategic weakness and vulnerability.
Obama is allergic to meaningful action, particularly in the Middle East. It is Obama's determined quest to prove to the Arab world that the U.S. has no interest in exerting influence in the region, which as a committed Leftist he dogmatically believes is the source of Islamic hatred and resentment against us. Obama in his overtures to the Muslim world has repeatedly signaled that pre-emptive capitulation to Arab belligerence and aggression is our strategy to ameliorate Muslim anti-Americanism. Hence, for example, the bowing and scraping apology tours. Oh, for the wisdom of peace through strength.
But this is Obama's policy, and as long as he commands, we will reap the calamitous consequences of appeasement. This foolish and subservient posture is already bringing grave geopolitical results: the bloody global upheaval and instability that the ruthless Islamist terror masters and their networks will exploit. America avoids giving offense to the mullahs and their extremist Islamic mobs, at the shameful and terrible cost of having passively tolerated prodigious human rights violations that we should have helped halt, or prevent.
The U.S. has made craven foreign policy decisions in the past. Eisenhower's failure to support the Hungarian freedom fighters in October of 1956 against the U.S.S.R. will stand forever as one of the most needless and tragic betrayals of authentic liberty movements in modern history. The serial abandonment of the cause of secular democracy in Iran is an on-going humiliation and reproach to the United States.
Again, the sense of Carter redux is inescapable in the present inaction toward Libya, completely reminiscent of the Left's shameful abandonment of the Iranian people to the bestial Ayatollah Khomeini during the Islamic Revolution. After the pro-Western Shah of Iran was undermined by Carter and deposed, the Islamic revolutionary forces conducted a protracted, bloody purge of freedom fighters. In every effort at revolt and reform since, the United States has mouthed empty words, and "stood up" for – business as usual.
This is all one can expect from dogmatic Leftists like Obama. His orthodoxy, shared with our geopolitical adversaries, is that the U.S. is inherently destructive and deserves the animus of the Arab street. So when the U.S. could be acting to eliminate the Somali pirate outrages, and to support in the Middle East unrest internal, secular pro-Western, pro-democratic forces, and marginalize radical Islamic and Communist-Socialist factions we are instead actually complicit in the carnage – "standing up" and standing by while the Muslim Brotherhood marshals it forces, and lays the ground for still more brutal Islamist regimes to come.
Stop Appeasing Islamists! – Restore Peace Through Strength!
And thus we watch unfold more foreign policy disasters of Left-wing American administrations, and realize, this will be the legacy of Obama's tenure – should America survive it. It is past time to restore Peace Peace Through Strength!
