I’m not sure if this counts as failing sideways or downwards, but Janet Napolitano, best known for implementing a wholly imaginary form of homeland security, is retiring to pursue her love of overseeing completely dysfunctional organizations.
Janet Napolitano, the U.S. secretary of Homeland Security and former governor of Arizona, is being named as the next president of the University of California system, in an unusual choice that brings a national-level politician to a position usually held by an academic. Her appointment also means the 10-campus system will be headed by a woman for the first time in its 145-year history.UC officials believe that her Cabinet experiences –- which include helping to lead responses to hurricanes and tornadoes and overseeing some anti-terrorism measures — will help UC administer its federal energy and nuclear weapons labs and aid its federally funded research in medicine and other areas.
Obama Inc. badly botched its response to Hurricane Sandy. If the media and a certainly grossly obese governor hadn’t gotten in the way of telling the truth, Sandy might have been as big of a disaster for Obama as Katrina was for Bush.
And what else are we looking at? Anti-terrorism measures? Napolitano flunked that badly. And even if she hadn’t, the relationship of that to running UC, despite its weapons labs and death ray machines, is unclear at best.
The University of California system is deeply troubled and it has no shortage of aspiring terrorists on the faculty and student body, but somehow I doubt she will be tackling that. The UC system has become notorious for turning a blind eye to violence and harassment by Muslim students against Jewish students. So maybe she will be the perfect pick for turning a blind eye to the problem.
Napolitano’s new job, like her old job, will require her to do nothing while pretending to be doing something. No wonder she’s qualified for it.
